Using the T56 6 speed was a obvious choice. We actually never removed the transmission from the engine. With just 12k we assumed the stock clutch was in good shape. We did have to make our own transmission cross member. Once we had the engine set in place and supported we where able to center the transmission and then fabricate the new member. This was a few hours of cutting and fitting.
Here is what we ended up with. The transmission cross member is made up of multiple angles so several pieces where used to create the final member. You must use a 98-02 style clutch hydraulic setup. It bolted right into the 3rd gen body with no modifications at all. The drive shaft from the 3rd gen can be resued as well. You should have about 1" of play with the yoke at the rear of the transmission.
We now sale this LS1 T56 cross member.
A new transmission cross member had to be fabricated to fit the LS1 T56. The frame rails that support the transmission are at multiple angles making things a bit more difficult. We did find that using a Energy Suspension transmission mount help bring the mounting piont closer to the front of the car. This helped when fabricating the crossmember.
This picture shows the transmission shifter hole from the underside of the car. We had to move the shifter hole back 2" so we would not have any clearance issues with the T56. On the interior side the shifter came up perfectly in the center of the console. We did not have to make any changes to the console.
This kit is for installing a LS1 into a Third Generation F-Body.
The kit includes:
