For our transplant we used a 2000 Trans Am LS1 engine with a T56 6-speed transmission. The areas of concern where the AC pump clearance on the engine cross member, AC/Heater box clearance with the coil pack and exhaust clearance.
We knew we had clearance issues with the AC/Heater box and the LS1 AC pump. This photo shows the AC compressor problem. We deceided to cut the cross member so it would fit. After marking it we removed the crossmember for easer access. This does not have to be done however we where having ours podwer coated.
Here you can see the engine cross member cut it so the AC pump would clear. We reinforced the area in the cross member cut out for the AC pump with some 1/8" plate. We curved the new plate to the radius of the AC pump. We also left enough room to attach the AC lines to the back of the pump.
During the development stage we paid close attention to fit and function. Here we see the motor mount in place and bolted up. You can also see the routing of the brake line. Though not bolted up in the picture the brake line clamp can be bolted to the motor mount frame bolt.
We had about a 1/8"-1/4" of clearance between the oil pan and the engine cross member. We also had to slot the idler arm mounting holes so we could slide the idler arm down a 1/4" or so. With this done we had a 1/2" of clearance between the idler arm and tha AC compressor.
Clearance was not an issue with the altanator.
Well with all the mounts fabricated and powdered it was time to reassembly everything back together. Our shop has a lift so we placed the body on it and lowered it into place. Once the front crossmember is lined up we can bolted it up.
Here the LS1 is sitting on place and looks right at home. We now can move onto the exhaust, electrical wiring, cooling, suspension and such. Once everything is in place we can get it running and take it for a ride!
We installed a Lingenfelter Z06 intake that we had powder coated red. Looks sweet !!!!
